Research from Strategy Analytics showed that Samsung shipped 27.8 million smartphones in the three-month period, compared with 17.1 million from Apple and 16.8 million from Nokia. The consultancy said Apple`s growth was hindered by customers waiting for the launch of the new iPhone 4S. Apple`s number four slot in total handsets was taken by China`s ZTE. Nokia was the top handset shipper with a 27.3% market share, followed by Samsung with 22.6% and LG with 5.4%. ZTE took 4.7%, pushing Apple into fifth place with 4.4%. The report came shortly after the release of Samsung`s third-quarter results, which showed profits falling 23% as strong growth in its mobile phone business was overshadowed by a poor performance in the memory chip arm. He said he had started talks to secure opposition support in parliament which would make the vote unnecessary. His announcement of a referendum angered European leaders and sent shockwaves through its markets. Facing calls for his resignation, Mr Papandreou called for unity in ruling party ranks ahead of a confidence vote on Friday. He has a thin majority. But Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, addressing the Socialist Party (Pasok) MPs immediately after the prime minister, said Greece must say it was not holding a referendum. He said Greece must do everything it can to reassure its international partners it will immediately implement the Eurozone bailout deal. EU leaders say Greece cannot get bailout cash until it agrees the deal. Responding to the recent developments in Greece, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that after talks with Mr Papandreou on Wednesday there was more of a sense of urgency in the country. "I think the message that was sent to the entire Greek political class yesterday by Germany and France together has helped in a sort of realisation of how things might develop and in Greece they have realised this," he told reporters at the G20 summit in Cannes. One minister has resigned in protest at the handling of the latest unrest. At least 20 people are reported to have died since the violence began on Saturday with hundreds more injured. Earlier reports said 33 people had died, but mortuary officials later corrected the figure, saying some of the deaths had not been related to the protests. Some 1,750 people have also been reported injured in clashes across the country. Culture Minister Emad Abu Ghazi has resigned and 25 Egyptian political parties also called for the ministers of information and the interior to be sacked over the violence. A group of senior Egyptian diplomats have also issued a statement condemning the way the protests have been handled, reports the BBC`s Jon Leyne in Cairo. It follows the International Atomic Energy Agency`s report on Iran and concerns about its nuclear programme. From 1500 GMT on Monday, all UK credit and financial institutions are required to cease all transactions with banks including the Central Bank of Iran. Chancellor George Osborne said there was evidence that Iran`s banks were funding its nuclear weapons programme. This is the first time the UK has used powers created under the 2008 Counter-Terrorism Act to cut off a country`s banking sector in this way. The United States and Canada are also expected to announce further economic sanctions against Iran on Monday. `Crucial role` Mr Osborne said: "We have ceased all contact between the UK`s financial system and the Iranian financial system. And in Europe, Spain became the third eurozone member in as many weeks to change government. The mortgage indemnity scheme, in which the government will underwrite part of the risk to lenders, could help up to 100,000 people in England. It is part of a wider strategy to build more homes and boost home ownership. Labour said it was "too little, too late" and did not compensate for earlier cuts to housing budgets. Building more homes is one of the government`s economic priorities, with the number of new ones being built at its lowest level since World War II, and with rents and prices remaining high while mortgage lending is restricted. Just 121,200 new homes were made available in 2010-11, half of what ministers say are needed. At the heart of the coalition`s approach is an indemnity scheme which will enable lenders to provide mortgages of up to 95% of the value of newly built homes to would-be buyers - most of whom are expected to be first-time purchasers - supported by government guarantees.
